Days 57-63: What Does Candida Die-Off Feel Like?

Candida Die-Off Symptom 1: Stomach Pain

So I woke up on today, Sunday, with insane stomach pain. And I knew honestly immediately what it was. We were at a friend’s BBQ last night and I was starving, having barely eaten all day. I crushed a bunch of chicken + steak, and then felt like I should eat a vegetable. And. Well. The only veggies there were nightshades — bell peppers + tomatoes. Should have (and DID) know. But I thought maybe it would be OK. Or at least that’s what I told myself. So I convinced myself for a second that it would be OK to have a bunch of them.

My stomach thought otherwise. I experienced pretty significant stomach gurgling, some diarrhea, and overall bloated feelings the majority of the morning (it’s getting better now but it’s almost noon). And after a bunch of ginger tea, a ginger pill, 2 probiotic pills, and some Coconut Cult coconut yogurt.

Candia Die-Off Symptom 2: Sinus Issues

Otherwise, this week I’ve had a lot of sinus issues. There are wildfires raging right now in California (mostly concentrated in Northern California) that are creating smoke which has adversely affected air quality. I’m wondering if I’m now a “sensitive individual,” because I’ve been having sinus issues all week. I had a few headaches day-after-day earlier in the week, and after taking Advil day after day, started to really think about what could be happening. Headaches are always a little alarming when they happen, because the first thing my brain jumps to is “DO I HAVE A BRAIN TUMOR? AM I GOING TO DIE?” Maybe it’s just the hypochondriac in me.

Anyway, I realized that I was having issues fully clearing my sinuses, and also that I was feeling super foggy and exhausted by the end of the day. It some point, it hit me that all of the things I was experiencing were stemming from sinus pressure. I did a sinus rinse with a Neti-Pot (where you literally pour water from one nostril so that it flows through your sinuses and other to flush out your sinuses with saline solution), and was shocked by how much space I felt in my sinuses. Throughout the weekend, I Neti-Pot’d a few more times, a few of which were excruciating feeling, making me realize how inflamed my sinuses really have become.

I’ve been feeling stuffy every since, but I think it’s because I’m finally bringing (this is gross, so I’m sorry in advance), a bunch of mucuous that was stuck up there down. I’m not sure if it’s the air quality, or if it’s seasonal, but they are NOT happy with me. I even took some allergy meds (Aller-Tec) and some Quercetin. Not sure if it’s allergies, and if it’s not allergies, not sure what else could be going on. I’m going to vacuum today and see if I see a difference…

Sinus Infections and Candida Die-Off

I just did a bunch of research to see if there could be a link between my sinus issues and candida die-off. And well, in fact, there IS. I’m not sure if this is the true culprit, but I think it’s still worth noting. So when candida dies off, it causes a reaction called the Herxheimer reaction. It’s an immune response to the detoxification process and happens in the treatment of other infections as well, like Lyme. When yeast cells die, they release a harmful substance which actually contains about 79 different toxins. This barrage of toxins taxes the kidney and liver, which makes symptoms experienced much stronger.

Some of these toxins are uric acid, ethanol, and acetaldehyde. They can trigger allergic reactions which lead to inflammation, similar to seasonal allergies or the common cold (sounds familiar, hm?).

All of this is feeling more and more on point, when I look at common Herxing symptoms:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain Fog
  • Moderate to more severe headaches
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Low grade Fever
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Swollen lymph nodes or glands
  • Inflammation
  • Flatulence, bloating, gas, diarrhoea and/or constipation
  • Dry mouth and oral thrush
  • Sore or itchy throat
  • Sleep issues
  • Psychological issues such as irritability, anxiety, depression and mood swings

I’ve bolded the ones that I’ve personally experienced… pretty on point.

I think this whole thing merits a whole new post.

Anyway. On to the fun parts.

Some Fun Compliant Stuff I Ate

Assorted tacos on a cauliflower taco shell — we made a delicious guac that served as a super yummy base. I put different things on here like zoodles, bacon, jicama, kale, and fish.

Sushi! It feels like such a treat these days to eat something that I didn’t cook myself. I went to a friend’s place and then ordered in — on the left, we got a sushi roll wrapped with cucumber instead of a normal wrapper with ahi, salmon, crab, and salmon inside. Super yummy. And then a little side salad — I picked out the tomato.

Crab Cakes + Curry Veggies/Salad

Well. The crab cakes ended up being more just like a crispy topping, but still super delicious. I made the mix with crab, mayo, lemon, and some coconut flour, coconut aminos, S&P , and garlic. I haven’t figured out the trick to get them to stay together.. I made exactly one that had any sort of structural integrity. Here it is – as you can see, it’s barely holding itself together. But it is golden brown and DELICIOUS. Ya win some, ya lose some.

Crab cake bits on a bed of mixed veggies — green beans, carrots, onions, and some egg. Made with curry powder, coconut aminos, and maybe a little bit of coconut milk too? Can’t quite remember. Delish.
Same whoop-dee-dah. But this time on salad. An animal protein is a super easy way to make a salad a little more interesting.

Takeaways

Maybe candida/BV whatever this gut stuff is really affects EVERYTHING. The sinus thing was super surprising to me. I’m not sure if I should do something about it or just wait and see if it resolves itself. I don’t know if it’s still cleansing or what (I guess so, since I am only 2/3 of the way through this cleanse), but I feel like it’s another day, another random health issue. Hoping things normalize soon.
